Each session is unique, depending on what issues are present and how each individual responds. Overall the focus is on improving the function, balance and energy of the fascial system (connective tissue that is throughout all systems of the body) and the meridian energy system (acupressure/Shiatsu). In some cases, including during rehab periods, a focus on scar tissue work and/or lymphatic facilitation can also be helpful. The result is…
- Better balance of tensions (muscle and fascia) throughout the skeletal system
- Better flow and connection of energy in its many forms, including circulation of blood and lymph, nerve signals, the biomechanics of more efficient movement, digestion, the flow of “chi” energy in the meridian system, ....
Categories of bodywork/energywork used to accomplish this include Myofascial Release (MFR), Acupressure/Shiatsu, Zero Balancing (currently studying ZB), Cranialsacral Therapy, Reiki, and various massage techniques.
What sessions are not:
- Not chiropractic or acupuncture. I do work with joints and range of motion, but not with chiropractic techniques, and I work with acupressure points and meridian pathways, but not with needles. Sometimes an individual may do very well with just one type of work or another. Often more benefit is experienced with multiple approaches working together. I often recommend chiropractic and/or acupuncture when more seems to be needed, and I often have clients referred to me by veterinarians seeking the same advantages of a team approach.
- Not diagnostic. I make observations about what I feel, not about the “why” or the underlying cause(s). An accurate diagnosis from a veterinarian is ideal for the most efficient treatment, when possible. There are also typically multiple issues involved, such as some arthritis here, some muscle tension there, some scar tissue here, and a strained ligament or tendon there, not to mention nutrition, metabolism, genetics .... You get the picture! The more holistic the approach, the better the potential for great results.
